While in the past most projects offline were developed by individual authors or by small teams of people, these days the Internet has shifted this perspective and made it all about collaborative work. Small pieces working together and joining forces in order to serve the greater good.

This has become true in many fields. From the “open source” movement in the software industry, where new computer programs are created by a large amount of individuals and continually edited by a unsupervised community, to scientific research, where peer reviewed projects are the key to the development of new scientific ideas.

Projects such as Wikipedia have changed the way we think about developing an idea. In this case, the free online encyclopedia permits anyone to start and edit articles in an unbounded amount of topics. However, art has been one of the areas in which the online collaborative approach is still in its infancy. We are used to the romantic notion of the artist working alone, writing her ideas in an isolated place where she and only she has access to the final story, but many artists feel that the time is perfect for us to commence a new artistic journey in which many persons can and will produce great works of art, all working individually from several places, accumulating their collective creativity into one single project.
